Betolar is committed to sustainable development and environmentally friendly practices. Over the past year, the company has increased awareness and invested in reduction of emissions produced by IT resources and software development. As a result of this work, Betolar has managed to reduce the carbon footprint of its cloud components by as much as 59.06% per year.

"While we at Betolar have continued to invest in the development of AI-based material research, we have succeeded in reducing the carbon footprint of IT resources and software development. This shows that combining technology and sustainable development is possible and produces significant environmental benefits," says Olli Kilpeläinen, VP Data Platform and Ecosystem.

The company's IT and data team has reviewed and optimized all cloud components, enabling significant energy savings and reducing environmental impacts. This achievement is part of Betolar's broader strategy aimed at sustainable business.

"We at Betolar believe that combining technology and sustainable development is key to building the future. We are proud that we have managed to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of our IT operations," says Betolar’s IT Director Marko Laitinen.

Optimizations made to the cloud infrastructure were studied together with Trail Openers, delving into the sources of emissions from the cloud infrastructure and their distribution. During the collaboration, Betolar's IT and data team strengthened their understanding of the environmental impacts of software and digital services, as well as their measurement and monitoring as part of green software thinking. This increased the ability to systematically and effectively consider environmental aspects in development work in the future.

"It has been great to see how Betolar's team approached the environmental impacts of digital services analytically and purposefully. The results show that reducing emissions is not just an IT project, but part of responsible business development. We were able to confirm the direct positive effects of the resource optimization carried out by Betolar's team on the reduction of emissions," says Trail Openers' Chief Commercial Officer Tuomas Välimaa.
